Welcome to Laurentian

Serving Ottawa since 1906

A Message from Our President: Marian McLennan

Picture
2022-2023 promises to be an exciting year for Laurentian. Our focus remains on youth at risk. Teams of members are already hard at work planning major fund-raising events, proceeds from which will be donated to this year’s focus recipients: The Innuqatigiit Centre for Inuit Children, Youth and Families here in Ottawa and HOST (Help our Students).
Our first event this year, in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 year reign, Laurentian is hosting a Platinum Jubilee Garden Party on June 23rd from 3:30-5:30 on the grounds of Elmwood School, 261 Buena Vista Rd. We will be joined by the British High Commissioner to Canada, Susannah Goshko.

Mark September 10th on your calendars and plan to participate in our New Edinburgh StreetFest, an all-day event featuring: a self-guided walking tour highlighting many of the historical homes and landmarks in the village; a musical program; a cafe and bake sale; an upscale treasures & jewellery sale, various craft vendors; an art show and sale; and even an antique car display.

With the easing of Covid restrictions, we welcome the prospect of returning to in-person meetings and social gatherings! In a departure from years past, we have agreed to share the role of President for 2022. Janet’s term will run from March to September with Marian carrying on from September to February 2023. Co-Presidents from other chapters offered such positive feedback, we are excited to put the idea into practice.

Thank you to all our members who have worked so tirelessly during the pandemic to find creative ways to stay engaged and who invented imaginative ways to continue our fund-raising efforts! A very special thank you goes to Valerie Blais who, despite having already served 8 years as President since joining Laurentian in 1998, stepped up yet again to lead us through the last year.

We are so fortunate in all our members. Keep your ideas coming! Remember, in the words of the Dalai Lama, “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”
